What is a pre-spray in carpet cleaning?

A pre-spray is cleaning chemical applied to carpet and left to dwell before the extractor goes over it. Giving the chemistry time to break down soil and oils means the extraction pass is mostly rinsing and recovery, so you get a cleaner result at lower pressure and with less water left in the carpet.

Why the chemical goes down first

Carpet cleaning is chemistry, heat, agitation and time working together. An extractor delivers solution and recovers it within a second or two of the same pass, which gives the chemical almost no time to act. Pre-spraying separates the two: the chemical goes down as its own step, sits on the soil for several minutes, and is only then flushed out.

That changes what the extraction pass is doing. Instead of asking pressure and water volume to do the cleaning, the machine is rinsing soil that has already been released and recovering it. The practical results are a cleaner carpet, less water needed, and a shorter drying time — because the water that never went in does not have to come back out.

Dwell and agitation

Dwell time is the variable that does the work, and it is bounded at both ends. Too short and the chemistry has not acted. Too long and the pre-spray dries in the pile, at which point the soil it lifted goes straight back down and the residue itself becomes something that has to be rinsed out. On a warm day, in an air-conditioned building or over a large area, drying out is the more likely failure.

Agitation is what gets the pre-spray off the tips of the fibres and down to where the soil is. A grooming rake is enough on light maintenance work; heavy traffic lanes and commercial carpet warrant a rotary or oscillating machine. Even distribution matters more than volume — a lane that received twice as much chemical is not twice as clean, but a lane that received none is visibly untouched.

Choosing the product

Match the pre-spray to the soil and to the fibre. Greasy commercial soil generally needs an alkaline product; wool and wool blends need a mild, near-neutral one, because high alkalinity damages the fibre and can shift the dye. Where the fibre is not certain, test in an inconspicuous area before committing to the floor.

When it matters

Pre-spray whenever the carpet is more than lightly soiled, and always in traffic lanes, entries and around lifts and workstations, where soil is concentrated and ground in. On commercial carpet with food or oil in the pile it is not optional — an extractor alone will pull water through greasy soil without removing much of it.

You can skip it on genuinely light maintenance work on a clean, frequently serviced floor, where a rinse pass is enough and the extra step buys nothing. It also has to be planned around: pre-spraying a larger area than you can extract before it dries is worse than not pre-spraying at all.

The usual errors are all about timing and volume. Spraying the whole floor at once, then working back to a section that dried twenty minutes ago. Compensating for a short dwell with more chemical, which leaves residue that attracts soil. And relying on machine pressure to make up for chemistry — on a POLIVAC Predator MK3, the wand pressure is factory set to 500 PSI for good reason, and winding it up does not clean a carpet that was never pre-sprayed. Work in sections, give each one its dwell, and extract before it dries.
