What is spray buffing and when should you do it?

Spray buffing restores gloss to a polished floor between full recoats: a fine mist of spray-buff solution is applied to a small section and worked immediately with a pad on a rotary polisher. The solution fills light scuffs and the pad lays the finish back down, so the floor comes up glossy without a full strip and recoat.

How spray buffing works

Spray buffing is an interim maintenance procedure for a floor that already carries a polish. A spray-buff solution — a dilute emulsion of finish and cleaning agents, supplied for the purpose — is misted lightly onto a small section of floor, and a rotary polisher with the appropriate pad is run over it immediately, while it is still wet. The pad's friction and the solution together lift light soil and scuff marks, and the finish carried in the solution fills and re-levels the fine scratches that make a floor look dull. Gloss returns without stripping and without a full recoat.

The distinction from a recoat is scale. A recoat lays a complete new film of finish across the whole floor and needs the area closed while it cures. Spray buffing puts a very small quantity of finish only where the pad works it, is done section by section, and the floor is usable again as soon as that section is dry. That is what makes it an interim procedure rather than a restoration.

Match the chemical to the machine speed

This is where the procedure most often goes wrong, and where the industry's loose vocabulary causes real damage. Conventional spray buffing is low-speed rotary work — POLIVAC's C25 and PV25 polishers run at 375 RPM, and the compact A23HS at the same speed — and the solution is formulated for those speeds. The related high-speed procedure, usually called spray cleaning or high-speed spray buffing, is done on a burnisher at 1500 RPM and above with a different chemical made for it.

The two solutions are not interchangeable, even though both are sold as spray buff. A low-speed product run under a burnisher can haze, streak or powder; a high-speed product at 375 RPM often will not respond at all. Read what the product is rated for and match it to the machine you actually have, rather than to the name of the procedure.

When it matters

Spray buff a floor that is dull, lightly scuffed and marked in the traffic lanes but whose finish is still sound and continuous. It sits between burnishing, which shines an existing finish without adding to it, and recoating, which adds a full new layer — so it is the right answer when burnishing alone is no longer bringing the gloss back but the floor does not yet warrant being closed for a recoat. Its whole economic point is postponing a strip, and a floor spray buffed on a sensible cycle will go considerably longer between strips than one that is not.

Do not spray buff a floor whose finish has worn through to the substrate. There is nothing there for the solution to re-level, and working a pad over bare vinyl scours it. Do not use it as a substitute for cleaning either: the floor must be swept or vacuumed first and, if it is genuinely soiled, damp-mopped or scrubbed before you start. Spray buffing over grit turns the pad into an abrasive and grinds that grit into the finish — the quickest way to leave a floor looking worse than when you began.

The specific risks are worth stating plainly. Over-applying the solution is the usual fault and it produces the opposite of the intended result: a cloudy, streaky build-up that traps soil, and a soft residue that reduces slip resistance on a floor that people then walk on. The mist should be light and the pad should take it up almost immediately — if the floor is still visibly wet behind the machine, too much is going down. While a section is wet it is a slip hazard, so barriers and wet-floor signs stay up until it is genuinely dry, which is not the moment the machine moves on. Pad selection matters as much as the chemical, because too aggressive a pad cuts into the finish instead of polishing it. And the procedure throws fine dust and dried finish particles into the air: a machine with extraction, such as POLIVAC's PV25 suction polisher, captures that at the pad rather than leaving it to settle back onto the floor and into corridor air.
